It is often the case that the students confuse essays and reviews. Though both should be written according to similar requirements, the difference between essays and reviews is considerable.
Essays and reviews may be written on similar topics. This especially concerns books or articles analysis. For instance, essays and reviews may be written on the same subject with regards to a particular book or literary work.
So, What Is the Difference between Essays and Reviews?
Perhaps, the most tangible difference is building of the arguments and their nature as such. For example, essays and reviews may be written on a separate literary work, but may view it from different perspectives. There exist the following similarities between essays and reviews:
- Structure (both have introduction, main body, and conclusion;
- Relation to a definite literary work (both may discuss plot, characters, or events unfolding in the book);
- Requirements as for quotations (when discussing a book or a literary work, the citations are usually required).
The differences between the essays and reviews are no less numerous:
- Essays rarely discuss the structure of the book or the author’s credibility ;
- Reviews are more descriptive than essays;
- Essays can be argumentative, i.e. they may not agree with what is written in the book/literary work;
- Essays may discuss topics raised in the book and not only those that lie on the surface.
The students are usually assigned with a definite type of writing. With these differences and similarities taken into account, they will not have problems with distinguishing between essays and reviews.
